Across rural India, many women have always been entrepreneurs in ways that often go unnoticed. They have managed farms, preserved traditional skills, produced goods, supported family businesses and found ways to make resources stretch further. Yet, for many, the opportunity to grow beyond individual effort has remained limited by challenges such as access to markets, financial resources, technology and business knowledge.

Collective enterprise changes that.

It begins with a simple idea: when women share knowledge, resources and ownership, they can create opportunities that may not have been possible alone.

From Working Together to Building Together

Traditionally, many small producers operate at the beginning of a long value chain. They grow, create or produce, but the greater share of value is often captured elsewhere. Without access to processing facilities, market connections or business skills, their efforts may not translate into sustainable income.

This is the foundation of the Rural Women Entrepreneurs (RWEs) supported through the Udyamini Mission. By coming together, women are building enterprises that are rooted in their communities while creating opportunities that can grow beyond them.

Their journeys show that when women have the skills, confidence and support to lead, they do more than create businesses. They strengthen families, preserve local knowledge and contribute to more resilient communities.
